The Dangers of Not Having a Hobby

To a large extent, hobbies are not only about finding yourself, but also reinforcing your identity through activities that resonate with you.

Not having a hobby will make you lose touch with yourself, and as a result of this you will be investing your time into unfulfilling activities and generally, you’ll be much more unhappy.

Hobbies allow us to counteract the monotonous day to day activities (such as work, although this is not always the case) with excitement and spontaneity.

Disadvantages

In the previous section we explored the advantages, so the disadvantages are going to be mirror-like reflection of these. Some include:

  1. Your life will be less interesting:

To say that if you aren’t pursuing any hobbies you will become boring is a highly flawed statement. However, you can be sure that your life will be much more hollow. Without a hobby you are a slave to your routine, and you thus your day to day routine is responsible for all your happiness.
  2. You will stagnate:

The most important thing is to always be moving forward, learning more about yourself, the world, and the people around you. Without a hobby it is extremely easy to idle as there is far less stimuli to keep your mind’s hunger at bay.
  3. You will become more stressed:

Hobbies are important because they help alleviate stress, as they supply you with a feeling of both fulfilment and escapism. With a hobby you are far less likely to ruminate. As a result of this, you are likely to focus on less meaningful activities.
