Intrinsic Motivation: The Science

Intrinsic motivation occurs when we act without any obvious external rewards.

We simply enjoy an activity or see it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and actualize our potentials.

When you pursue an activity for the pure enjoyment of it, you are doing so because you are intrinsically motivated.

Your motivations for engaging in the behaviour arise entirely from within rather than out of a desire to gain some type of external rewards such as prizes, money, or acclaim.

Numerous studies have examined the effects of intrinsic motivation, including the adaptive consequences for individuals such as exposing them to difficult situations and developing their diverse competencies to cope with unforeseen circumstances.

Intrinsic motivation is the readiness for individuals to learn about new subjects and to differentiate their interests, thereby fostering a sense of purpose and meaning.

Thus, there is a distinctive neuro-scientific relationship between growth mindset and intrinsic motivation, and through discipline and focus, the symbiotic relationship between the two will become organic and autonomous.
